Investing in younger generation

AS Nigeria consolidates its economic dominance in Africa and presses to attain the projected 12th position in the global economy by the year 2050, we need to see that the present decline in revenues due to the slump in world oil prices does not deflect our trajectory to the mid-century target date.
A major driver of global competitiveness is the higher education attainment of the productive population. For Nigeria, the unfolding austere conditions threaten the pursuit of this goal. Therefore, if we are to realize our global destiny, we need to bring new ideas to bear on investing in Nigeria’s younger generation, our future leaders and builders. In this way, we avoid poor attainment and stem dropout in higher education. We need to explore extra-budgetary resources to deliver as student financial support. We should aim to distribute such assistance to the doorsteps of Nigerian households with greater focus on young people in the lower socio-economic groups, especially the women. In this way, we democratize access to higher education and strengthen our competitiveness.
In this discuss, we do not address issues of capital investments that enlarge holding capacity in our higher institutions, nor financing for administration and research. These forms while important benefit all students both rich and poor. These are matters for another day. We therefore limit ourselves to direct financing that ends up in the student’s wallet to cover tuition fees, books, accommodation, travels, meals, personal care, among others. While the rich can conveniently afford these, poor youths and their parents are hard pressed to do so. The latter groups are the focus of this intervention.
What then are the directions we should chart in our bid to accomplish these goals?
From work we did in 2012 – 2013, evidence from emerging economies of the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China) showed that an average of about 20 percent of their productive populations had attained higher education. For Nigeria the attainment rate was about 8 – 10 percent leaving an enrollment gap estimated at about 2 million to be bridged by the year 2020.
Currently, South Korea leads the world with over 60 percent higher education attainment of their young adult population. Earlier, America was ahead. And when President Obama took office in his first term, he committed America to the goal of restoring its leadership in graduate attainment by the year 2020. Accordingly, he strengthened America’s student finance system to raise the levels of enrolment and attainment for young university graduates.
It is therefore crucial that Nigeria takes a cue and the concerted measures to raise enrolment and attainment, bridge the gap and build the momentum for competitiveness.
Apart from the higher education of the productive population, another variable in the global competitiveness equation is knowledge driven leadership. As the industrial revolution ebbs, and the knowledge revolution unfolds, leading nations are taking vantage positions in the knowledge spaces in order to maintain dominance, infusing doses of knowledge leadership in all spheres of governance. For example in politics, leadership is no longer a matter of dexterity in wheeling and dealing. Rather, forward looking nations increasingly turn to and present the best from higher education systems all over the world.
Modern Singapore started its journey many years ago when late Lee Kuan Yew, its extraordinary founding father with two first class degrees at Cambridge University, took over the headship of the small nation and transformed it from a third to the first world.
Other leading nations have done the same. In the United Kingdom, we had Margaret Thatcher of Oxford, a research scientist. Also, Tony Blair and now Cameron are of Oxford. In America, we had Bill Clinton, an alumnus of Oxford and Yale and a former professor. Under him, America witnessed its longest period of economic prosperity in history and fiscal surpluses for four years running. Now they have Barack Obama of Harvard and a former senior lecturer at Columbia.
Even in global governance, knowledge leadership is reaffirmed. We have the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, product of Harvard. At the World Bank, we have as the President, Dr. Jim Yong Kim also of Harvard. Incidentally both have roots in South Korea, a world leader in higher education attainment.
Of particular interest, the current World Bank president is a medical doctor who worked at the highest levels in higher education governance and in global civic sector development. As a result and for the first time a president, who does not come from a political or financial background, now steers a rebranded ‘knowledge’ and ‘solutions’ institution for a balanced pursuit of human and social development in health and education, among others, and economic goals.
The foregoing leadership choices reflect the global impact of the unfolding knowledge revolution fueled partly through the expanding access to higher education worldwide to produce quality higher level human capital of knowledge and skills. In this new revolution, knowledge is the primary factor of production, just as land was to the agricultural age and machines to the industrial revolution.
Global competitiveness is a function in part of the quantum and quality of the productive population and leadership, both drawn from the higher education systems of the emerging knowledge societies.
In Nigeria, we should align with these unfolding scenarios. Our citizens and governments at all levels need to see to it that we invest heavily in our younger generation to enhance our global competitiveness and leadership position. The key is the democratization of higher education access through student financing targeted as safety nets for the vast majority of our young men and women residing at the lower strata of the society. It should aim at the strategic goal of at least a graduate in every home in Nigeria by the year 2030. The building of this high level human infrastructure should complement the physical infrastructure of the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan, 2014 – 2043.
This challenge is surmountable. All it demands is the political will.
It needs emphasis that in investing in our younger generation we do our youths no favour. We are only discharging the abounding duty of grooming the heads that lie uneasy to bear the heavy burdens of leadership and nation building for a future Nigeria.
In this regard, we would like to draw attention to a flagship programme, the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development for first class graduates now spread across the leading 25 universities of the world. As part of a more comprehensive national student finance initiative, this scheme should be sustained as a nest, a breeding ground for future leadership for nation building for Nigeria.

We’re satisfied with results so far –PDP

National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh has declared that the party is satisfied with the results of the presidential election released in eight states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Before INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega  shifted further announcement of the results to 8p.m. yesterday , the electoral body had released results of the elections in Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Enugu states and the FCT.

Reacting to the results, Metuh told newsmen that President Goodluck Jonathan had been  able to put up a good performance.

“The eight states announced show that President Goodluck Jonathan is leading; we aren’t interested in number of states won, but the total number of votes cast with two-thirds majority in 25 states and we are sure of getting that.”

The party national publicity scribe added that his party would forward petitions to INEC on states which results it was not comfortable with.

Metuh said: “It is lawful to make pronouncements on results already released and we are satisfied with results already released so far.

“In areas where we have issues, we have directed our state chapters to bring petitions.

“ That’s the procedure to address perceived wrongs or anomalies in an election.

“We shall not partake in violence or any unlawful act. The idea of calling on Nigerians to protest is deceitful.

NYSC denies death of 2 corps members in Gombe

ABUJA – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Tuesday, denied a media report of the death of two Corps members, who served as ad-hoc staff in Gombe State at the just concluded March 28 Presidential and the National Assembly.
In a statement signed by the NYSC Director of Press, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, in Abuja, the scheme clarified that the two names broadcast by Channels TV were INEC ad-hoc staff, while commiserating with the families of those that lost their lives.
The statement reads; “The attention of NYSC management has been drawn to a misleading news story featured by Channels Television on the death of two corps members in Gombe state during the attack on some parts of the state.
“Management categorically wants to state that no corps members in Gombe died during the said attack by the suspected insurgents.
“The two names carried on Channels TV as Corps members who lost their lives were INEC ad-hoc staff and not corps members as reported. The NYSC however commiserates with families of those that lost their lives.
“NYSC management wants to reassure all Nigerians that we are indeed committed towards the security and safety of Corps members nationwide.”

INEC officer arrested for illegally collating results in Delta

A member of staff the Independent National Electoral Commission was arrested on Monday at the commission’s office in Asaba for violating INEC’s rule on collation of results.

The INEC worker, who served as the electoral officer for Ndokwa East Local Government Area, was taken away by policemen in a van after he admitted to collating the results for the local government area against the rule of the commission.

The electoral officer came to the state collation centre at INEC, Asaba,  to present the result of Ndokwa East without the collation officer for the local government, whose job it is to present the result.

When he was queried by the state Collation Officer, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, the electoral officer said the collation officer for the local government did not show up and due to pressure from party agents, he was forced to collate the results alone in the presence of party agents and security operatives.

The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Anidi Ikowak, who was infuriated by the explanation, declared the results collated by the electoral officer invalid.

The REC said according to INEC’s rule, the electoral officer is not permitted to do the job of the collation officer and faulted the electoral officer for not calling him to report the situation.

Addressing the erring officer, Ikowak said, “There is division of labour in INEC’s activities. The electoral officer cannot stand in the place of the collation officer. If the collation officer did not show up you should have called me and another collation officer would have been nominated from the list of those we have trained. And replacement needs to be approved by me or even the chairman.

“I’m the REC. If this state collation officer did not come, I would have reported to Abuja and another one will be sent. I can’t take up that role, I can only assist. So, the result you have collated is invalid.”

Aluko, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Otuoke, asked the electoral officer to submit the result and write a report on the situation, but noted that it had not been officially accepted.

Immediately, the electoral officer was ushered into a police van and driven off.

Buhari wins massive majority in kano state

The opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari earned a massive victory in the key northern state of Kano, beating his rival, President Goodluck Jonathan, by nearly 1.7 million votes, official presidential election results released Monday said.
Buhari’s victory in Kano in the polls held Saturday and Sunday had been expected, with the margin of victory seen as crucial to his chances nationally.

The 72-year-old former army general is from neighbouring Katsina state and like most in Kano is a Muslim from the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group.
Buhari won 1,903,999 votes in Kano, which is Nigeria‘s second most populous state after Lagos, the southern economic capital.
Jonathan, who hopes to contain his losses in the north, won 215,799 votes.
Buhari beat Jonathan in Kano by roughly a million votes in 2011.
Kano is among the Nigerian states hit hardest by Boko Haram Islamists, where many have criticised Jonathan’s handling of the insurgency.
Aside from tribal and religiously allegiances, Buhari’s effort to play up is national security credentials may have helped boost his margin of victory among Kano’s frequently-attacked population.
The president and his Peoples Democratic Party are expected to run-up huge majorities in the southeast, perhaps offsetting Buhari’s wins in the north.
Results were expected to trickle in overnight on Monday after a closely fought campaign.

Woman stabs husband to death over PDP, APC presidential candidates

In Lagos, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old pregnant woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death during a quarrel over who would emerge winner between the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidates, while voting was on-going , weekend, at Ejigbo area of the state.

The incident, which threw the densely populated area into disarray, occurred at about 12noon inside the couple’s one room apartment at 81 Military zone junction.
There were different accounts on how tragedy struck. A version of the account said the couple had divergent views on their choice of presidential candidates. While the husband was said to have decided to vote for the PDP, his wife, simply called Onyinyechi, reportedly chose to vote for the presidential candidate of the APC. An argument which degenerated into a fight over whose choice would hold sway reportedly ensued between them.
In the process, Onyinyechi allegedly stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife in the chest region.
Another version said the deceased, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, told his pregnant wife to take the okro she was grating inside the room, to the veranda which also served as kitchen , an instruction she reportedly disobeyed, following which an argument which led to a fight occurred. Their neighbours however described the suspect as an amicable person who had never quarreled with anyone since she moved into the building.
One of the tenants who spoke on condition of anonymity told Vanguard that they did not witness how the suspect allegedly stabbed her husband.
But he explained that : “ We were all outside waiting to vote when Onyinyechi rushed out, shouting for help. Out of curiosity, we all ran inside, only to discover blood all over the ground, on entering their apartment.
”On closer observation, we noticed that the blood was from her husband chest region. We met him on the ground. Before we could rush him to the hospital, he gave up the ghost.
Perhaps, he would have survived the attack had Onyinyechi called for help early. From all indication, it was clear that she attempted to manage the situation immediately the incident occurred. It was when she discovered that the situation had overwhelmed her that she raised alarm.
”I do not know the name of her husband. We only know that of his wife, who we fondly call Onyinyechi. The irony of this matter is that she is not cantankerous.
”She has never beaten a little child, let alone to fight with any neighbor. Again on that day, we saw both of them together. They were seen sitting outside, one hour before the incident occurred. Policemen from Ejigbo later came to remove the corpse to the Isolo morgue”.

PDP blasts APC over alleged false alert on security agencies

ABUJA—NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP yesterday took a swipe at the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC over its claim that the Federal Government was trying to use security agencies to alter the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

In a statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP described the alarm by APC as yet another level of desperation.

Metuh said, “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has noted yet another false alert by the APC claiming that the Federal Government was trying to use security agencies to alter the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The APC, in its desperation and quest to cause confusion has forgotten that ballots are publicly counted at the polling booths and results declared in the presence of the voters, party agents and observers.

“They have forgotten that from the polling units, the ballots are taken to the ward for collation; from the wards they get to the local government and subsequently to the senatorial zones for further collation before they get to the states, all in the presence of party agents and election observers before they get to the national level for final collation.

“It is an obvious fact that agents of political parties and election observers at every level of the collation have the results as they move from the polling booths. We therefore ask, at what level will the security chiefs get involved as the APC claims?

“Our question is, is it that the APC believes it is losing the elections and as such resorted to crying wolf and seeking to use every means to discredit the process, create tension in the polity and truncate our democracy?

“For us, as a law-abiding party, we are waiting for INEC to conclude its collation process and announce the results of the elections.”

Don’t declare any PDP candidate winner in Anambra, Uba tells INEC

Awka — PEOPLE’S Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Anambra State, Chief Chris Uba, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to declare any candidate of the party winner in the state and National Assembly election.
The reason he adduced for this was the fact that there were still pending cases involving all PDP candidates in Anambra State at the Supreme and Federal High Courts.
According to Uba, INEC will be erring in law, if any of the PDP candidates was declared winner without the determination of the pending cases.
Vanguard recalls that Uba’s faction of PDP   had gone to the Supreme Court, praying for an injunction to restrain INEC from issuing certificate of return to any candidate of PDP for the 2015 National Assembly election in Anambra State, pending the determination of the suit fixed for hearing on June 9, 2015.
Furthermore, Uba said the removal of names of PDP candidates on the ballot paper by INEC was illegal, adding that nobody should be issued certificate of return in Anambra PDP.
Uba said: “For now PDP has no candidate in the election. People voted for the party and not candidates.”

Amaechi was right for taking Patience to ICC — Kuti

THE head of Ransome Kuti’s dynasty and founder of the Nigerian Network of Non-Governmental Organizations, NNNGO, Ms. Yemisi Ransome Kuti, has said that Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State was right in taking the first lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan to the International Criminal Court of Justice, ICC, for making unguarded utterances during her campaign tours in the country.
Kuti, at the launching of The Women’s Situation Room for 2015 general elections in Abuja, said, yesterday, that the governor was right, if he decided to take the first lady to the ICC for making some utterances to incite people for violence, when she ought to have acted in the opposite as the mother of the nation, adding that the First lady had not represented the country well in some of her recent utterances.
She said, “I think, Amaechi was right, if he is taking her to court, fine, he should do so. The utterances of Mrs. Jonathan have not represented our country well. I am afraid, a lot of things she said has cast a bad light on women as a whole. Women are known to be more constrained in their approach and in our statements because we look at so many sides before we utter statements. But the language of diplomacy ought not be found in the purview of women alone; when one is in public office, he or she should not be speaking as an individual because he has a responsibility to speak with some level of constraints, discipline, ensuring that he is in that position to create peace within the people; that why his statements should not be the one that upset or breed acrimony.
“As a mother of the nation because of her position, she has a greater responsibility than any other woman to ensure that her statements are geared towards bringing peace, justice and creating more love among her people than to create division. That is why I think Amaechi was right in taking her to ICC.”

Results have not been collated in 23 states – Jega

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fulted the claim made by Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode the Director, Media and Publicity of PDPPCO of the Peoples Democartic party.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos. in a statemet said our attention has been drawn to the claim made by the Spokesman of the Jonathan Campaign Organization, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, that the PDP is winning the presidential election in 23 states and has scored 64 per cent.
Shortly after Mr. Fani-Kayode made his claim, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, was asked to comment on it.
Prof. Jega responded thus: ”I don’t know the sources of such information (that the PDP is leading in 23 states). The results have not been collated in 23 states. Fairly very few states have actually collated. In fact, only two states have been collated…. There is the need to be careful about the information being put there by people who are clearly partisan.”
Addressing Journalists Sumday in Abuja, Director, Media and Publicity of PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode said the outcome of claimed results was based on results filed in by it’s polling agents nationwide, just as he stressed that results would be subjected to the confirmation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Fani- Kayode however described as not only nonsensical, but also far-kfetched, absurd and childish, results being released by the social media, even as he stressed that the results were being sponsored by the APC, warning the opposition to desist from feeding the media with what he described as fake results to prevent plunging the country into chaos.
He said: “As we speak now, we are winning in 23 states and we have 64 percent while the APC is winning in 14 states and has 36 percent. These results are subject to confirmation by the Independent National Electoral Commission.”However, we are certain of what we are saying because we have information from our agents in every polling unit nationwide. No one must test our will by attempting to change these results and the APC should desist from pushing this nation to the brink of fire, chaos and destruction with their dirty lies and propaganda

Polls: Army, police tighten security

Soldiers and riot policemen are on some highways in the North Central,   Osun and Kaduna States with just three days to the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The security personnel are   seen searching vehicles, forcing motorists and travellers to spend longer hours on the roads.

Findings by AFAM BLOG TV show that the security checks are intensified as more residents flee from the North over fear of post-election violence.

The fleeing residents, who are leaving states like Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Plateau are heading southwards.

Our correspondent, who passed through the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Guma-Makurdi routes on Tuesday (yesterday) learnt that additional security checkpoints and men had been deployed in the last couple of days.

A journey of about three hours from Abuja to Makurdi, Benue State in normal times, took close to six hours on Tuesday due to the heavy security presence.

An officer at one of the checkpoints on the highways said, “Political tension has built up everywhere and politicians are looking for ways to outdo one another.

“Security agencies have a responsibility to prevent any act likely to lead to a breach of public peace.

“At times like this, you don’t rule out the possibility of hired persons transporting arms and other dangerous weapons. So, it is better to prevent than lament later.”

The officer   added that people were travelling to the South over fear that “something ugly could happen during or after the elections.”

He stated, “Despite all the assurances given to them not to flee, some continue to do so.

“This has been a daily occurrence, but we keep assuring them that nothing will happen.”

One of the fleeing people,   Godwin Nzeagu, told one of our correspondents that he would “never” allow what happened to him after the 2011 presidential poll to recur.

Nzeagu, a textile dealer, who hails from Anambra State, claimed that he escaped death by a whisker when rampaging youths attacked his business premises in 2011 soon after the results of the elections were declared.

“All these assurances do not give any guarantee that you are safe. You can’t tell what will cause the mayhem,” he said.

In Lafia,   Nasarawa State, operatives of the Department of State Services are seen patrolling the town with lethal weapons in an apparent ‘show of force.’

The DSS operatives wear the service’ black vests with DSS boldly printed on the back.

In Osogbo and Ede in Osun State, many residents   woke up on Tuesday   to see the soldiers stopping and searching motorists.

A resident, Segun Adeyemi, said the presence of the armed soldiers on Ilobu Road in Osogbo caused panic among them.

Although he explained that the soldiers did not harass anybody, he said he had thought that policemen would be used to carry out such task since a court had restrained the Federal Government from deploying soldiers for the polls.

It was gathered that some soldiers, who were also deployed in Akoda in Ede, caused traffic snarl with their checkpoints on Tuesday.

Efforts to speak to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Army Engineering Construction Regiment, Ede, Capt. O. Olaoluwa, proved abortive.

Calls put across to his telephone were not answered and a text message sent to him was also not responded to.

But the APC in the state has criticised the Federal Government for disobeying   the   High Court order barring the deployment of soldiers for the elections.

The spokesperson for the APC in the state, Kunle Oyatomi, said   in a statement on Tuesday that the Federal Government   planned to use the military to harass and arrest APC leaders on the eve of the elections.

The statement read, “President Goodluck Jonathan has a duty to respect the law, otherwise his apparent disregard of court orders in the run-up to presidential and general elections will constitute the greatest threat yet to the survival of democracy in Nigeria.

‘‘From the look of things in Osun, regarding the deployment of soldiers for the election, it would appear that President Jonathan has no intention whatsoever to respect the series of Federal High Court-rulings, not to deploy soldiers for the conduct of March 28 and April 11 elections.

“Soldiers were sighted yesterday in some parts of the state. The Federal Government’s led Peoples Democratic Party planned to use the military to harass, arrest APC leaders on the eve of the elections as they did last August when over 700 APC leaders and members arrested and locked up in detention on the eve of the governorship election.

“If President Jonathan goes ahead to disregard the legal position on this matter as articulated in several Federal High Courts across the country, that would be worst contempt for the law, exhibited by any Nigerian head of state or President ever. The consequences for our fledgling democracy will be catastrophic.

“Jonathan should act in honourable manner like a Christian   he claims to be by respecting the law, otherwise, he would be considered not better than the like of Mobutu Sese Seko of Congo and Idi Amin of Uganda, both of whom had the greatest disregard and disrespect for their countries’ laws and brought grief, that still resonates today.”

Also soldiers bave been deployed in areas considered as ‘flashpoints’ in Kaduna State.

The soldiers were seen by one of our correspondents     erecting makeshift tents at the LEA Primary School Malali, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Unguwn Yaro; Unguwan Kudu, Unguwan Sunday and Rigachukun areas of the state.

At Mando Motor Park, Hayin Banki and the Western Bypass, men of the Nigerian Air Force have been stationed in there.

One of the men, who spoke on condition of anonymity said that they were on “special duty.”

The police in the state have also intensified patrol of the metropolis and areas such as Alkali Road, NEPA Roundabout, Golf Course Road and Isa Kaita Junction. They   have stationed their patrol vehicles at the Police College/Constitution Road in Barnawa

Russia to build Jordan’s first nuclear power plant

Jordan has signed a $10bn deal with Russia to build the kingdom’s first nuclear power plant, with two 1,000-megawatt reactors in the country’s north.

The deal, signed in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Tuesday caps efforts of the energy-poor kingdom to attain energy sufficiency and reduce imports in this area. Jordan lacks any local energy sources and imports 96 percent of its electricity.

The violence in neighbouring Iraq and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has threatened and in many cases, completely cut off electricity supplies in Jordan.

According to the state’s Petra news agency, Jordan plans to finish construction of the plant in Amra by 2022. There are hope it will be fueled with uranium mined in Jordan.

The deal was signed with Russia’s state-owned Rosatom company.

“As you know, we lost the oil from Iraq, natural gas from Egypt, and the country has been bleeding and losing on an average $3bn every year,” said Khalid Toukan, head of the Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission.

“Nuclear power is definitely one of the solutions to graduate from total dependency on oil and gas,” he added.

Obasanjo warns against plot to hand over to military

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday warned against handing over the reins of government to the military.

Obasanjo said the speculation that the government was planning an Interim Government had been substituted by speculations that President Goodluck Jonathan was plotting to hand over to the military. He said that doing so would undermine the integrity of the country.

The ex-President, while hosting Aisha Buhari, wife of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, said, “I do hope we will get things more right. A lot of rumours are flying around; I think we have gone away from the rumour of Interim Government because that is not in our constitution.

“I hope we will soon go away from the rumour of handing over to the military because the military is not meant to run the affairs of a nation in terms of running government.”

Obasanjo, who said that he was happy that the country had gone beyond the Interim Government rumour, added that he hoped the nation would also survive the rumour of handing over to the military.

He said, “The international community will not condone it, particularly the African Union where we have a situation, we have said and it is part and parcel of the constituting Act of the African Union. Any government that is brought about not on the basis of the constitution will not be accepted; will not be tolerated and will not be a member of the AU until that government is dismantled.

“It shouldn’t be. We are the largest country in Africa; we should be a model, setting examples, we shouldn’t be drawing Africa backwards. I hope we will not. I hope at the end of this exercise, we would be where we should be, leading Africa and showing examples for the rest of Africa and indeed the rest of the world.

“We have the goodwill of many people. I watched last night, President (Barack) Obama talking about our constitution; I watched our Brother from Ghana, the current Chairman of ECOWAS talking about our constitution. They are all interested, they all wish us well; should we wish ourselves anything less?”

Recently, the former President had warned the current administration not to plunge this country into chaos by following the footsteps of the former President of Cote d’lvoire, Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to hand over to the winner of the presidential election in his country.

Obasanjo also bemoaned hate campaigns among politicians, advising that they should focus more on what united the country as opposed to what divided the country.

According to him, for anyone who is interested in the future of this country, issues of insecurity, economy and unemployment, among others, should form the focus of political campaigns.

He said, “Unfortunately, issues that should have been the main item of our campaign, they did not. We have serious issues of security, we have serious issue of our economy, we have issue of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, we have serious issues of infrastructure.

“These are issues among others that I believe campaign of those who are interested in the present and the future of this country should be directed at.

“How are we going to get them and what are we going to do? Not trivial issues of certificate or no certificate, not trivial issues of somebody talking about someone is a Nigerian and not a Nigerian.

“I said it, this is what they had in Cote d’Ivoire and led them into almost a very serious problem, not issue of religion, not issue of tribe, not issue of section but issues of unity of this country and the hate campaigns that we have embarked upon now, I hope this will be the last time in the history of this country that we will have this type of campaign of hatred or division.”

Obasanjo commended Buhari’s wife, stressing that women had a role to play in politics and enthronement of good governance.

Buhari planning to build prisons —Patience Jonathan

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has warned women against voting for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, saying the retired soldier was planning to build prisons if elected into power.

Speaking at a rally organised by the women wing of the Peoples Democratic Party, in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday, the President’s wife said Nigerian women should reciprocate the gesture of her husband, who ensured that a large number of women was appointed into political offices during his administration.

She said the APC was a dying party that thrives on propaganda and lies, saying that women should not be deceived into “returning to bondage.”

She said, “If you vote Buhari, you vote for prison. When the PDP is busy building schools, they are busy thinking of building jails.

“We will not allow our children to be put in jail, God forbid. We pray for oneness, we pray for unity, we pray for peace.”

Patience urged the women to come out on Saturday and vote for “the government that has provided more access to education and health care and brought down by 50 per cent the maternal mortality rate.”

“He was a former Head of State, he did not build Almajiri schools. It was Goodluck Jonathan that built the schools.

“Ask him what he did for women when he was Head of State. It was Goodluck Jonathan that remembered women,” she said.

She also noted that the PDP government would increase the number of women in government to 45 per cent if returned on Saturday from the current 35 per cent.

“They said we should change, we can only move from bad to better, not from better to bad. Jonathan has done well and will do even better if returned. They have nothing to show,” she said.

She also promised to revive the works done by her predecessors, Mrs. Mariam Babangida and Maryam Abacha, in their efforts to better the lot of women.

Speaking earlier, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, said the President would get the maximum votes because of the impact of his programmes on the lives of the people of the state.

Polls: Two shot dead in Rivers as police arrest 96 suspect

Two persons were shot dead yesterday by rampaging youths in Okposi, near Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, in a political-related operation.

This is even as the state police command has arrested 92 suspected cultists and four alleged robbers.

The victims, whose identities could not be ascertained as at Press time, were shot dead, following the burning of the house of an aide to a commissioner in the state.

One of the arsonists, who was later apprehended in the mayhem, confessed that he took the action because the commissioner’s aide refused to include his name in the Subsidy and Re-Investment Programme (SURE-P) list.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent, confirmed the incident.  He said the crisis was a spill-over of the violence that erupted on Monday.

Muhammad stated that normalcy has been restored in the area, following the deployment of six troopers.

Meanwhile, police yesterday, paraded four suspected armed robbers and 92 cultists at the Swift Operation Squad (SOS) premises in Port Harcourt.  They were arrested at different locations.

According to the PPRO, who briefed journalists, the four robbery suspects were nabbed on Monday at Akpajo police-check point at about 4: 30am while returning to Port Harcourt from a robbery operation in Akwa Ibom State.

He said that items recovered from them were a Sienna bus, marked RH 339 CH, N1.6 million cash, three locally-made pistols, one revolver, ammunition, 17 phones and an international passport.

Similarly, items recovered from the 92 suspected cultists include assorted firearms and ammunition, cutlasses, charms and other lethal weapons.

The command, however, decried the upsurge of cultism in the state, assuring  that it would sustain its “belligerent and ruthless” onslaught on the suspects and their patrons.

“Their nefarious and deadly activities, which, sometimes, were attributed to politics, have, no doubt, constituted a nuisance to the general public and have the capacity to truncate the electoral process,” he said

Buhari: I’ll Make Naira Equal to the Dollar

In a campaign pledge certain to question his grasp of the Nigerian economy, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Monday promised to ensure that the naira would be equal to the dollar in value if voted into office.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Buhari said this during the south-east presidential rally of the party at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
“It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than N230 to one dollar. This does not speak well for the nation’s economy,” he said without any indication that he stated how he is going to achieve this naira-dollar parity.

He urged the people to vote for APC, noting that he would ensure that corruption was tackled headlong if elected.

Earlier, the Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, had urged APC supporters to vote for the party’s candidates at all levels, noting that a vote for Buhari without support to others at the state would amount to nothing.
Okorocha said Buhari would address the problem of electricity, bring back the kidnapped Chibok girls and promote industrial growth.

He said that Buhari was loved by the people in the region and urged them to elect him and other APC candidates during the March 28 and April 11 general election.

Former Governor of Anambra, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju,  and Chinwe Obaji, former Minister of Education, were formally welcomed to the APC at the rally.
The rally was attended by APC supporters from Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu and Imo States

Jonathan vows to eradicate corruption in oil sector, if re-elected

President Goodluck Jonathan has promised to entrench greater transparency and eradicate corruption in the nation’s oil sector if re-elected.
He gave the commitment on Sunday evening in Lagos at a youth event titled “An unimaginable feat in sports” designed to highlight his administration’s achievements in the sports sector.
The event which lasted till the early hours of Monday attracted sports men and women, young professionals as well as beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s scholarship schemes among others.
According to the President, his administration will work tirelessly to ensure that Nigerians are not stigmatised any where in the world because of corruption, adding that the same way his administration was able to use technology to tackle corruption in many areas such as fertilizer distribution, procurement and salary payment, he will do so to check corruption in the general society.
“We are going into oil sector. People talk about the oil industry because that is an industry with a lot of people and a lot of money is involved. But I promise you that in the next four years, we will sanitise the oil sector” he said.
The president however emphasised that the issue of corruption was being exaggerated leading to the creation of an impression that the whole country was corrupt.
The President also promised to work with the young people because of his conviction that parents who do not encourage young ones are preparing their families for extinction.
Specifically, he promised that he will give more youths under the age of 40 years more opportunities to serve as ministers and heads of government parastatals.
